A Face Without Freckles…

Snapshot_204…is like a night without stars.  There are numerous phrases to describe those blessed (though some might say cursed) with constellations of dots all over our person.  People with fair skin, those of the ginger or red haired persuasion, of certain heritages…all of us, susceptible to freckling.  Summer brings a whole nother bag of tricks–we may not tan well, but when you leave a ginger out in the sun, they bake up in a whole different way.  First, the dreaded sunburn (oh my god, I can’t even really explain the pain from some of the the crazy burns I got when I was a kid….), after which we are left with more freckles than we ever had before.

Summerfest has begun, and with it, a menagerie of fetching summer items from some of Second Life’s best creators. First and foremost, The Skinnery’s Full Body Freckles.  Never before have I ever seen such a smattering of hyper-pigmentation in Second Life.  I’ve always worn freckles, but these are just….the most wonderful, realistic portrayal I’ve ever seen.  I layered both the face and body layers over Glam Affair’s newest release, Summer.  Summer can be found at Summerfest as well, and has been released in both the Jamaica and America skin shades.

Snapshot_198

I am also a big fan of BOOM, and Aranel Ah doesn’t disappoint with her Hampton bikini, available in a variety of cute colors (see navy blue, above.)  She includes both rigged and non-rigged mesh options; I chose the modifiable/editable non-rigged version so I could pull my top up;  if you go with the other, be prepared for some ‘nip-slip’–the bra only goes about 6/8ths up, and you definitely catch some areola action (bet you never thought you’d see *that* term anywhere….)

Snapshot_195

Do check out Summerfest when you can; it’s a bit laggy as it just began yesterday, but it’s worth the slogging through.  And after you’re done, don’t hesitate to pop over to Braata Beach, a gorgeous serene tropical paradise with no sign of naked beach dwellers anywhere!  Now for that Pina Colada…..

Siesta

Snapshot_194Sometimes, after all the shopping is done, all you feel like doing is laying around (and possibly taking a nap.)  I’ve been super impressed with these eyelids from Slink, which really are mostly a photo prop (click on the picture for a better look), but how nice is it to have an option in that regard?  SL eyes can be wonky; and they certainly don’t close well; these lids are truly lovely (and modifyable, so you can match your own skin tone–but be careful; if you don’t do it right, you’ll end up matching your lashes to your skintone as well!)

On a different note, I’ve also been having issues with the dreaded ‘black rectangle’ on Firestorm on pictures of high custom resolution (some of you might be familiar with this).  Generally, we set our ‘custom’ resolution to it’s highest possible setting (6016×3197), but when you do so, your pictures end up looking something like this….

Snapshot_013

Not really workable.  I’ve found that the black rectangle goes away at a max resolution of 4096 x 2177, which I don’t really feel sacrifices TOO much detail in your pictures.  Until FS works this known bug out with it’s next release, it’ll have to do.  (Note:  All of these pictures, like most of my pictures, are raw shots from SL with the exception of a tiny bit of iphoto editing.)

Girl, Put Your Records On

Snapshot_179I am a music fiend.  People who know me can attest to this; there is nothing I know more about, nothing that I’m more passionate about.  In part, I can attribute this to my education–I hold degrees in music education and vocal performance; then again, I never would have sought that knowledge out if I hadn’t been a big music dork to begin with.

My earliest memories are wrapped in vinyl.  My father used to pull out his records, 78s and 45s….I remember staring at cover art, nearly obsessed with Sgt. Pepper’s, Supertramp’s Breakfast in America, Herb Alpert’s Whipped Cream….for hours I’d stare at them, absorbing them while he played John Lennon’s Double Fantasy (Just Like Starting Over was his favorite song, we must’ve listened to it hundreds of times), Cream, Styx, Fleetwood Mac, Jim Croce, Simon and Garfunkel, Billy Joel…all of my first music lessons were those informal sessions in my parents’ basement.

I remember my father’s tears and my mother’s sobs when, at the age of four and a half, John Lennon was gunned down and killed; you shouldn’t remember those things so young, but you do.  I knew how important this man was to them–even though they’d never met him, it was like losing a family member.  On some base level, I think I also sensed the importance of music; how deeply it goes, how it gets into your blood and your bones.  I grew up voracious, hungry for music and any kind of exposure I could get to it.  I worshiped the Beatles, cleaned my bedroom to the Ronettes and the Chiffons, sang along with Patsy Cline and Karen Carpenter, and thankfully and perhaps inevitably became a singer myself.

In Second Life, music is everywhere.  The quality of it varies greatly; you find meet markets fronting as ‘jazz’ clubs that play nothing but Michael Buble and Chuck Mangione’s Feels So Good (not to take anything away from Chuck, but even he will tell you he’s far more than just one song from 1977), live ‘artists’ whose bios often read something like “Twila Jane grew up singing to the radio and she’s always loved music and has never performed outside of her shower before, but is so happy to be a Great Big Star in Second Life!”….the fact is, you really never know what you’re gonna get.

That’s not to say that talent doesn’t exist, and that there aren’t reputable clubs around the grid.  One place I’ve always felt at home is The Velvet; a little gem among a lot of rough.  The focus here has never been on what your cartoon looks like or how formal your dress is (even though I advise you to always be presentable!–as ever, scroll down for my stylecard), but on the music exclusively.  Some of  SL’s most eccentric and well versed DJs spin here, and on any given night, you can grab a piece of shabby couch and just soak up the music (or quietly snap blog pics, like I did tonite.)  If you’ve never had the pleasure, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Good Girl Gone Bad

PicMonkey Collage2Most of the time, I dress on the traditional side; girly and flirty styles are generally my go-tos.  Every once in awhile, I will be smitten by a specific edgy item which then inspires me to build an entire look around it.  Toast Bard of fashionably dead is known for unique trend forward pieces with little hints of whimsy, and these combat boots are no exception.

Lucky for all of us, they are available in multitudes of color and patterns right now at The Arcade.  I added a closeup of the boot so you could see the incredibly realistic texture work she put into them; the spikes are Arcade RARES, and come in different placements (ankle, toecap, heel).  The nice thing about them is that you can then add the spikes to any of the boots–just be careful not to impale yourself or anyone else in the process ;)

I sort of felt like they were crying out for fishnets and a flirty skater skirt, and topped it off with a fun screen tee and girl blazer from The Secret Store.  Sometimes, it feels good to be bad.  After all, you can’t be an angel allllll the time ;)

The Road Not Traveled

Snapshot_159“What if you could be given a piece of paper with your entire destiny written down on it.  Your future partner(s).  Your children, or lack thereof.  Your job(s).  Even, the date of your death, and perhaps, how it would come about.  Would you read it?  Would you want to know?”

I’m sure most of us have been asked a version of that hypothetical scenario.  It’s enough to give one pause, the idea of being given your absolute future.  Certainly, most of us would turn that opportunity down, choosing to forge ahead with living, and letting our lives unfold in front of us, unknown.  I remember walking past the children’s department at work, wistfully looking at the gorgeous little dresses, wondering what my children would look like, praying that I’d have a little girl one day that I could dress up.  I was lucky enough to be given not one, but two little women, and of course, they have closets that even Suri Cruise would envy.  We cannot see ahead of us, that much is certain.  Life is not an episode of Dr. Who or Early Edition.

We do, however, have the gift of hindsight.  Perfect, clear vision of the things we’ve already done, and how we’d change it, if we could.  I think about myself 20 years ago.  17 years old, about to start my senior year of high school, with a clear halcyon vision of what my future would be and how my actual future ended up being so incredibly different.  Do I have regrets?  You bet I do.  We all do, I think, to a greater or lesser extent.  But if I could talk to that 17 year old girl, and if I could tell her not to give up on her singing career, to go to New York, to keep auditioning and pushing; to explain that her weight issues would be with her her entire life, and the sooner she realized that and took charge of it, the happier she would be (and not to wait until she was 35 to figure it out); to not settle for someone who was only just…good enough, but to wait for someone she couldn’t possibly live without; to stop the vicious cycle of undercutting myself constantly so that I was never truly successful or truly happy; if I could tell her these things…would I?  Knowing how bullheaded I am, it’s quite possible she wouldn’t even listen to me.  But if she did, and I could change the course of my own destiny, would I want to?

Yes I married a man who I knew deep down wasn’t my perfect fit, but he made me laugh and I was young and I think irrationally scared that no one would else would want me (this is how fat girls think) and yes, that marriage has slowly and perhaps inevitably unraveled in front of my eyes until all that’s left are two people trying to manage and financially fund a big household and only sometimes managing to get along.  Yes, I’ve been a member of Second Life and have lead a ‘virtual’ existence for so long now that I identify as closely with my avatar as I do my own reflection, and yes, the person who holds my heart in his hands is someone I cannot hold in reality.  Yes, I’ve worked in retail for almost 10 years, and now when I sing, it’s a sometime thing with my vocal ensemble or in SL as a solo artist, for people everywhere, but not as ‘me’, but as Nina.  I haven’t set foot on a stage or done a show in years.  All of those things make my heart heavy.

But if I could have taken a different road, I wouldn’t have the two little people who make every day worth waking up for.  If my marriage or my career had been more fulfilling, I may never have stayed in SL as long as I have, and I never would have met my Niv, or for that matter, any of the people there who hold special parts of my heart today.   Crap, I might not even have health insurance (such is the life of the artist…)  The point is, I’m not sure any path is the better path; I can only look at my life and see the path I took, my regrets and my successes, my blessings and my curses, and embrace it.  I have to have faith and believe that there is a reason all of the things I imagined for my life either didn’t come to pass, or transpired differently.

All I can do it let go, and let God, thankful for the blessings collected along a bumpy path.

Shadowboxing

Snapshot_158I am no expert photographer.  I don’t have photoshop or 8 hours a day to spend working on photo magic, so almost all of my pictures are raw shots, save for a little bit of iphoto editing.  Working with my pictures is a constant learning process; one that’s both fulfilling and sometimes exhausting.  Playing with shadows is something new for me; I wasn’t able to use them on my 13 inch macbook, and have only recently upgraded to a stronger processor/15 inch macbook.  Here are a few raw attempts at playing with shadows and light.

On a fashionable note, I’m wearing some new pieces from the new events for June.  First, from the Arcade is my hair.  It took me more than a few spins to get the cinnamon shade of Lory by Wasabi Pills, but it was worth it.  Good braids are hard to find, and this one lays perfectly.  I’m also wearing a dress from Valentina E; she’s featuring two styles at this month’s FaMeshed.  Enjoy the top of the month shopping!

A Tale of Two Tees

PicMonkey CollageI loooooovvvvve me some fun tees.  I have been an avid collector and gifter of snarky, intelligent tee shirts for a long long time, so I was a happy camper when I saw erratic’s newest releases.  Not only are they smart and sweet graphic tees, they’re also tucky (squeeee!)  These are two of my favorites, but you can see the whole kit and caboodle here on their flickr.  They also released a cute little zippered skirt that comes in multiple colors.  I’m still giddy from finding these (a true sign of a shopping fiend), so onto the dual style card….

I Stand 4 Love

Snapshot_145

Stand 4 Love is a project headed by RicoRacer Flux-Clarity and is, according to their blog site, “an awareness charity project to promote the visibility and rights of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Straight loving couples to have the right to marry and be recognized by the law across the world.”  You can find out lots more about it here.  I have been a proud straight ally in the gay community for a very long time, and I was very happy to see an awareness event like this one in SL.  If you’d like to try your hand at your own Stand 4 Love statement, you can find the directions here (it’s very simple.)  Check out their flickr as well.

I Stand 4 Love.  Do you?

Retro Truth: The Search Continues

Snapshot_139

Since Mr. Truth Hawks told us we could submit multiple pictures for his model search (see details here), I decided I would try a completely different tact from my super glam photo session the other day.  Since Gattina is such a lovely retro style, I paired it up with a simple vintage bikini from Artilleri and hit the beach again.  I’m also wearing Glam Affair’s brand new skin release, Cleo.  Since retro styling pretty much demands a made up face, I chose a cherry red lip with subtle eye-makeup (Cleo 7).  You can find multiple bloggers blogging every single version of this skin with all of it’s tattoo layers and subtleties, or you can stop by Glam Affair and pick up the demo box for yourself.  It really is quite lovely; I picked up 3 different make-up styles myself :)

Truth Model Search

I’m sure many of you worship at the alter of TRUTH.  Truth Hawks is one of, if not the biggest name in the hair game, and has been for as long as my pixelated fanny’s been around.  To celebrate his new shop, he has released 6 new hairstyles and along with it, a model search.

The instructions for it can be found on flickr here.  If you’re thinking of entering, I highly recommend you read those.  There are many pictures that will be ineligble because people are wearing old hair styles, pictures aren’t the correct size, etc.  This is my effort.  If you’ve not yet taken a look at his new releases, lift the rock off your head and hit the store or MP.
